While education was not the Du Bois's primary focus, his work made a lasting impact upon American education. Du Bois's contribution to education included the following:

• fostering within the white community a sense of responsibility for their fellow citizens of African descent.
  
  
• uniting Americans of all ethnic backgrounds in the struggle for racial equality, including equalized education opportunity.
  
  
• expanding the number of higher educational opportunities available to African-Americans.
  
  
• significantly raising the quantity and quality of educational opportunities available to African-American children.
  
  
• communicating the importance of both quality education and hard work in the quest for social advancement.
  
  
• encouraging culturally-sensitive education.
  
  
• founding and publishing the first children's magazine written especially for African-American children.
